History of Gattonside

Gattonside Heritage Accommodation is a beautiful and grand Victorian mansion located in historic Battery Point. It was designed by the distinguished colonial architect, Henry Hunter, and built for Mrs JR Scott in 1885 as her private residence. Henry Hunter was a well-respected architect who designed, and supervised the construction of many iconic Hobart buildings and churches such as St Mary’s Cathedral, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (for which he won a design award in 1860) and the Masonic Hall.
Set on almost a hectare of land in the heart of the colony the property featured an extravagant 6 bedrooms upstairs plus a servant’s bedroom, parlour, drawing room, dining room and library. In the late 1880’s in colonial Hobart Town, Gattonside was a display of much wealth and prosperity.
Gattonside was a private home for many years until in 1953 when the Royal Hobart Hospital purchased the property to use an accommodation for interns. It remained as hospital housing until 1972. Since 1972 the grand old mansion has been home to various businesses including a doctor’s surgery and a design firm.
In 1999 Gattonside was then purchased by a local business man who began operating the mansion as an upmarket Bed and Breakfast. In 2004 Gattonside hit the media spotlight in a cloud of controversy when its owner applied to build 33 units for university students in the grounds surrounding the mansion. The application was rejected by the Hobart City Council after much opposition from local residents and the Heritage Council. In 2005 a local Tasmanian couple then purchased it and restored it to its former glory and continued operating it as a luxury bed and breakfast.
Today, Gattonside is a National Trust listed property and also has five trees of significance within the grounds.

Well maybe 4.5 stars.

Well situated just on the edge of the Hobart CBD Gattonside started life as a wealthy merchant's mansion back in the 1800s. Now a B&B we enjoyed our HUGE bedroom (with ensuite) which was the old parlour. Massive amount of room and very well furnished...

Classic accommodation for romantics

Heritage accommodation with a romantic feel. Good place to make your wife happy. Self service breakfast which suited us fine as allowed us to supplement with own fruit and vegs. Why would anyone want to stay in a sterile hotel?More
